East of Mijas

Torremolinos

Probably the most famous coastal town of them all, Torremolinos was the very first town on the Costa del Sol to be developed for tourism during the mid-20th Century.

Like many coastal towns in this region, Torremolinos was originally a fishing village. Now it has become a resort town, with endless amenities.

The town is made up mostly of high-rise apartments. Although the town offers a spectacular climate, it isn’t the most family-friendly destination on the Costa. As a resort town, the hotels, bars, restaurants and nightclubs are always lively, especially during the summer months.

Down by the beach, Torremolinos offers a beautiful promenade, and the chiringuitos are famous for their seafood, including fried fish, sardines cooked on barbecues and traditional paella.

Benalmádena

Benalmádena is one of the biggest resort towns on the Costa del Sol. Divided into three sections: Benalmádena Pueblo, Arroyo de la Miel and Benalmádena Costa, the area is home to around 50,000 residents. One third of the residents in the area are from foreign countries.

Benalmádena Pueblo is the typical Spanish white pueblo, located 300 metres above sea level, with narrow streets and little townhouses. Arroyo de la Miel is very popular among both tourists and locals due to the great array of things to do, and is home to the famous Tivoli World amusement park. Benalmádena Costa stretches over 8 kilometres of the Mediterranean coastline, and has many blue flag beaches, as well as being well known for the local marina. The marina is famous for its international bars and restaurants, as well as several nightclubs and hotels.

Overall, Benalmádena is a very family-friendly community offering entertainment for everyone.

Fuengirola

Fuengirola is another one of the most popular tourist towns east of Mijas, located just between Benalmádena and Mijas Costa.

From Roman and Moorish roots, this beach town is well known for its Moorish castle, Sohail, sitting on the top of the hill just outside the town of Fuengirola. What was once a fishing village during the mid-20th Century, Fuengirola has become a modern, cosmopolitan town, with tourism being one of its biggest industries.

Fuengirola offers 8 kilometres of beaches, with a typical Spanish promenade complete will small chiringuitos running alongside them.
